2008 In Review

by David Hobbs

In previous years, when looking back on the work of The Michael Project, I have written about trials of many kinds, but also how God has moved mountains and stretched our faith. There is not one person in Zimbabwe in 2008 who would say we haven't faced unbelievable challenges and trials this year, and The Michael Project is certainly no exception. None of us know what the next chapter in Zimbabwe's history holds, but we do know that God himself tells us to ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds ....'

Cholera Outbreak

A child in Wingate getting treated & filtered water

The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is affecting thousands of people in the country due to inadequate clean water supplies.

We praise God that Wingate has not been affected, and we are taking precautions by supplying chlorine tablets to the community, and have a water filter box in the pre-school. We are also educating the community through our volunteer programme, and the teachers in the pre-school used the last few days of school to explain to the children the importance of washing their hands. We were able to give each child a long bar of soap to take home after the Christmas party.

Some of the children in the prison have been affected, but we have

been able to obtain medication and treat them. We have also supplied the prison clinic with a 50 litre aqua box water filter and chlorine tablets – in the hope that they will ensure that the children are given clean water.

Shalom Children's Home

After a year of waiting, we have now been granted a permit by the Local Planning Authority to establish a children's home at Shalom. While this is not the final permission, it is a HUGE step in the right direction. Our next stage is to gain a licence from the City Health Department and we are praying that this will be a short process, and then we will be able to start accomodating more children in the home.

We had previously moved one 11 year old boy from Wingate to the home, because he was very sick and needed better care and nutrition. Praise God that he is making good progress and his visits to the clinic are now monthly as opposed to fortnightly. Please pray for his well being (spiritually, emotionally and physically).

Cycle Challenge Success

The Michael Project team who competed in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in Joburg on 16th November, all completed the race in under their target time of 3 hrs. Dave (our illustrious director) finished in 2hrs 35min (not bad for a 40 something year old!). John Rivers and Rupert Wilkinson also did incredible times of 2hrs 43min and 2hrs 57min respectively. Well done guys !

Thank you to all those who supported them in this fundraiser.

Please Pray for

Zimbabwe, as people face unprecedented economic hardship in the light of inflation exceeding two hundred million %, and foodstuffs hard to come by in the shops. Praise God for our dedicated team who  still cheerfully touch the lives of the children everday.

Pray for peace and righteousness to prevail in Zimbabwe.

Pray that the cholera outbreak in the nation will be contained and that the Lord will heal those who are sick. Pray too that clean water supplies will be restored.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD , whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

God to bring revival to all of the communities we are working with, and that they would be transformed.

Our work in the Binga communities. That the Lord would continue to grant us favour with the authorities, and that our team would continue to see breakthroughs with the children.

That God would heal these children of the deep emotional hurt that so many of them have and that they would know His love for them.
