Chikurubi Women's
Prison
A team from The Michael Project regularly
visits nursing mothers in prison. We provide basic essentials for the women
and their babies, with teaching and encouragement through bible studies.
Our work with the women led to the prison authorities asking us to develop a day care centre for the children, within the prison grounds. This caters for the children of the women inmates and prison guards. Contruction on the building commenced at the beginning of 2004, while three teachers were undergoing training with Oasis Zimbabwe, in preparation for working at the centre.
Thirty children are being taken care of at this centre, which is being run in conjuction with Prison Fellowship Zimbabwe.
What if before you are born, your mother is sentenced to a ten year prison sentence. You are now 3 years old, and the only life that you have ever known is confinement in the prison, with no toys and prison food. There is nowhere else for you to go and you have no prospects and little hope.
This is Tendai's story. Tendai now attends The Michael Project's day care centre where she is learning to draw and paint, where she receives a high protein meal every day, has learnt about Jesus .... and for the first time in her life, is having fun.
